Supporting young people with climate resilience

An advanced training program for mental health professionals working with young people

This comprehensive training is specifically designed for therapeutic professionals working with young people, enabling you to provide the support and understanding they need to build climate resilience.

Through deep listening, accompanying, regulation, and co-regulation, you can be the bridge to a more resilient and empowered generation. This course addresses the unique challenges young people face and empowers counsellors and therapists to provide effective support.

Jo’s work is informed by current neurobiological research on attachment, trauma, recovery and resilience. It is integrated within a context of compassionate mindfulness, deep relational care and social and global context.

This course can be offered as a one or two day event. The two day event allows for deeper reflection, skills practice and application to existing professional approaches.

Course aims:

  1. To support counsellors in exploring and understanding the nature of climate distress

  2. To share practices and strategies for counsellors to find support for their own response to the climate crisis

  3. To explore the context and impact of climate distress on young people generally, and specifically the clients of this particular service

  4. To increase confidence and skills  in supporting students with climate and related distress

“The team were all very complimentary about you and the content of the training. They all felt that the training was very applied which they really appreciated, and felt confident they could apply some of their learning immediately to their practice which is wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing your skills and knowledge.”

Be the bridge to a more resilient and empowered generation

Young people are strongly impacted by the deepening climate and social crises. Many young people are not talking to the adults in their lives about how they feel because they are used to being dismissed. Many are dealing with strong feelings in response to what they know about the state of the world right now and predictions for their future.

We as adults, therapists and counsellors have a responsibility to ensure the therapy room becomes a safe space to explore these feelings and that we know how to support young people with them.

This course explores the growing climate crisis through the lens of climate psychology, helping you understand how it impacts children, especially those who have experienced trauma. Together, we’ll examine the effects of climate anxiety on young people in care and the essential role adults play in offering stability and support. Through practical strategies and shared insights, you’ll gain the tools to help both young people and their caregivers navigate uncertainty with resilience and meaningful action.

Climate resilience is the ability to navigate the emotional challenges of climate change while fostering empathy, taking meaningful action, participating in solutions, and making informed choices.

Participants in this course will develop a practical understanding of the psychology behind climate anxiety and how it affects young people. They’ll explore the crucial role of warm, regulated adult connections in building resilience, grounded in an understanding of the brain’s response to stress and uncertainty. By the end of the course, they will have the skills and awareness to feel more confident in supporting young people through difficult conversations about the climate crisis while also learning how to care for their own well-being and that of their colleagues.
